The real Kong was hiding inside the building, and once the police had cleared the streets, he was secreted to a train and transported to the great western wilderness of Yosemite and around. For a handful of years, on occasion, as is documented in this photochrome, he would be seen by a tourist or two, typically very briefly and in most instances, he would disappear before the startled visitor could get their cameras set up for a shot. In any case, in our investigation of this rare phenomenon, we could not find evidence of any sightings later than 1939, so we have to assume that either Kong passed quietly or he became frustrated with the increasing number of visitors to Yosemite and retreated to spend the remainder of his days pining for the peaks of Skull Island in quieter environs.
