THE STORY
Boris Karloff hosted this anthology series for Gold Key Comics from 1962 to 1969, lending his name and likeness to a horror host format that ran for nearly 100 issues. This third volume collects issues #11 through #16 — tales of suspense, crime, horror, and irony. Stories include a gambling cheat punished by spirits of playing cards, an enchanted telephone booth that grants success until greed intervenes, and a mirror that reflects an antique dealer’s heart’s desire with dark consequences.
THIS EDITION
Dark Horse Comics reprinted the complete series in their Archives format: oversized hardcover, high-quality paper, faithful to the original color separations. Volume Three features a new introduction by John Landis, the director of An American Werewolf in London and The Blues Brothers. Original cover price was $49.99 U.S.
COVER ART / ILLUSTRATIONS
The front cover features the title in bold yellow distressed lettering on black, with a black-and-white portrait of Karloff. The painted artwork shows a green-hued monstrous figure looming on the left, while a man holds a sparking chain-like apparatus on the right — laboratory elements, a shovel, and a lantern fill the foreground. The back cover carries atmospheric horror artwork in dark blues and grays, with the series synopsis and publishing details including barcode and ISBN.
