This is a “very good” green cloth-wrapped vintage hardcover published in 1953 by Charles Scribner’s Sons.
Binding and hinges are tight, not cracked. Brief, neat original owner name penned on front free end paper, a handful for pages in the first half of the book have some penciled underlining and a few very short marginal annotations at times, none of which impact the legibility of the text. No torn, folded or loose pages. Boards and spine are uniform in color, not tanned or sunned, board corners crisp.
Matching dust wrapper is complete, not price clipped. Some edge wear and chipping along spine and edges, more so along the upper, spine lightly tanned. Some tanning at upper edges. Overall, still quite pleasing.

Why is Walt Whitman’s face as familiar as his poetry? In answering this question, Ruth Bohan tells a story of self-invention and portraiture. Whitman approached successive editions of Leaves of Grass as opportunities to establish close, dynamic links between his poetry and visual representation. This is a "very good - " vintage book with a solid spine and sturdy cover hinges. The paste downs have the remains of the tape used to affix the dust jacket to the book, with the front end paper having the original owner's name neatly penned. Front and back board surfaces are relatively even overall, not spotted or stained. Some edge wear to bottom board edges. The board corners are mildly bumped with a hint of wear at very tips. Titling on the spine is fairly rubbed. Book has a hint of spine cock (when laying flat, as you look at the top or bottom edge, the front cover over hangs the back cover by a tiny bit - see accompanying images). The original vintage dust jacket is not price clipped, showing original publisher's price of $2.50. Remains of tape runs along outer edges of both front and back flaps. The spine is well tanned, with small losses at top and bottom. Wear and small losses at the corners of all flap folds. Not a perfect jacket, but still pleasant.
