Currier & Ives “New York City and the Great East River Serpent of 1872” print
$18.00 – $20.00Price range: $18.00 through $20.00
Art Print for the Man Cave, Pool room, office, or anywhere: "New York and the Great East River Serpent of 1872"
What many people have forgotten - and this print is pretty much the only remaining proof - is that New York and Brooklyn were plagued with water serpents in the late 1860s and into the '70s, with one of the largest and most problematic being the one that took residence around Governor's Island in 1872.
No one knew for certain, but it was thought that the significant whaling trade of the 1850's affected the sea serpent's food supply, forcing them to come into the harbor and rivers of New York in search of food.
As the whaling industry declined in America, sightings of the sea/river serpents diminished until what had been a daily occurence became shrouded in memory of just a few old timers. The last documented "river snake" sighting in Manhattan was during the heat wave of 1924, on August 23.
This print will look great in your living space and make for great conversation!

Hudson Valley Victorian era hospital 13×19″ or 17×22″ poster
$12.00 – $17.00Price range: $12.00 through $17.00
Gothic wall art steampunk poster, "Asylum Doorway", made-to-order wall hanging.
In 1871, New York State opened the "Hudson River Hospital for the Insane" in Dutchess County, on the East banks of the Hudson River, just below what is know known as Hyde Park. It was the second institution of it's kind in the state, being created since the original hospital in Utica, New York, was full. The High Victorian Gothic architecture was the first time it was used in an institutional facility. The building, although in a state of significant disrepair, is now on the National Historic Register. I took this photograph in 2007, intrigued by how the door had been "retrofitted" with a "modern" portal and the ominous "asbestos" warning. Will make an evocative addition to your living space's decor. Available in 2 sizes: 13 x 19" 17 x 22" Your print will be created using a wide carriage professional Epson printer with wide gamut, long lasting pigment based inks, applied to heavy 250 gsm art paper made by Red River Papers, designed for many years of viewing pleasure. Ships in a sturdy kraft shipping tube. All of our large format prints are carefully delivered to you in a sturdy kraft shipping tube. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
