THE STORY

Nancy Drew receives mysterious warnings not to travel to Scotland, but she heads to the Scottish Highlands anyway with her father Carson Drew and close friends to visit her great-grandmother at an imposing Highland estate. Once there, she encounters a missing family heirloom, threatening strangers, submerged vehicles, a dungeon beneath the castle, and the haunting sound of whistling bagpipes echoing through the misty mountains. The twenty-chapter mystery takes Nancy from lochs and houseboats to mountain hideouts in one of the series’ most atmospheric settings.

THE STRATEMEYER SYNDICATE

“Carolyn Keene” was a house pseudonym created by the Stratemeyer Syndicate, the same publishing syndicate behind the Hardy Boys, Bobbsey Twins, and Tom Swift series. The actual author of this volume is believed to be Nancy Axelrad, one of several writers who contributed to the Nancy Drew series under the Keene name. The Syndicate’s formula — plucky heroine, exotic setting, coded clues, and a tidy resolution — made Nancy Drew one of the best-selling children’s mystery series of the twentieth century.

CAPART

The front cover features Rudy Nappi’s distinctive artwork: Nancy Drew in full Scottish attire — black beret with red ribbon, dark vest, and red-and-green tartan kilt — standing on a grassy Highland knoll with bagpipes in hand. Behind her, a dense forest of dark pines borders a misty loch backed by blue-tinged mountains. White sheep graze in the foreground. The title appears in bold red serif type across the top, with “NANCY DREW MYSTERY STORIES” in a banner above. The spine carries the classic yellow background with the globe emblem, series number 41, and Grosset & Dunlap publisher mark. Interior pages include Nappi’s black-and-white line illustrations depicting scenes from the mystery.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • The Scottish Highlands setting makes this one of the most visually distinctive Nancy Drew volumes — the tartan kilt cover art by Rudy Nappi is among the most recognizable in the yellow-spine series
  • Identified as the 1965A-3 printing per Farah’s Guide to Nancy Drew Editions, with back cover listing titles only through #42 (The Phantom of Pine Hill) — a key point for collectors tracking printing variations
  • The Nancy Drew series has sold over 80 million copies worldwide and remains a cornerstone of American children’s literature and collecting, with the yellow-spine editions (1962-1979) representing a particularly sought-after era
