THE STORIES

Strangers (1986, pp. 9–444) follows six unrelated Americans who begin experiencing shared nightmares, phobias, and emerging paranormal abilities, drawing them to the remote Tranquility Motel in the Nevada desert — where a government conspiracy and an unimaginable threat await. The Voice of the Night (originally published 1980 under the pseudonym Brian Coffey, pp. 445–608) tells the story of Colin, a shy teenager in the coastal town of Santa Leona, whose friendship with the charismatic Roy takes a terrifying turn when Roy’s fascination with death reveals something monstrous beneath his charm. The Mask (originally published 1981 under the pseudonym Owen West, pp. 609–752) follows a mysterious young woman who brings joy to everyone she meets — until nightmares and a sinister identity begin to surface.

THIS EDITION

Published April 21, 1994, this bargain hardcover omnibus was the first time all three novels appeared together in a single hardcover volume. The separate novels had originally retailed for $33.40 combined; this edition was priced at $11.98. Most significantly, The Mask had never before been available in hardcover — this omnibus marked its first hardcover appearance. Koontz’s use of the pseudonyms Brian Coffey and Owen West is openly acknowledged on the copyright page, making this a useful reference point for collectors tracking his pseudonymous works.

COVER ART & DESIGN

The dust jacket features a striking surreal collage illustration by Don Brautigam (© 1994), designed by Isabella Fasciano. A large theatrical mask serves as the frame, its interior filled with a fragmented dreamscape: a lone figure beneath bare branches against a starry sky, a haunted Victorian mansion, a glowing syringe of green liquid, a masked medical figure, a ship sailing under dramatic clouds, a speeding train, and a large spider. The palette mixes deep blues and cosmic purples with vivid yellows, reds, and greens against a silver-gray background. The spine bears silver gilt lettering on blue cloth — clean, bright, and unfaded.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • First hardcover omnibus edition with complete first printing number line — important for Koontz first-edition collectors
  • First hardcover appearance of The Mask, originally only available in paperback under the Owen West pseudonym
  • Both pseudonymous novels (Brian Coffey, Owen West) openly identified — a collector-recognized milestone in Koontz bibliography
  • Don Brautigam jacket art is among his most recognized work for Putnam Koontz editions of this era
  • Strangers spent weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and was adapted into a 1994 TV movie

FOR COLLECTORS

With the complete first printing number line, original dust jacket by Don Brautigam, and the landmark first hardcover appearance of The Mask, this copy fills a specific gap in a Koontz first-edition collection. The jacket is not price-clipped, showing the original publisher code “9404” and the separate retail value of $33.40. The binding is tight and square, and the blue cloth spine with silver gilt remains bright and unfaded.
