This is a “good plus” or better vintage hardcover with a tight binding and intact hinges. No writing, no loose, torn or folded pages. The text block is square and closes tightly. Board corners are lightly bumped and are worn at the tips and bottom edges, but not worn through. The spine head and heel are bumped with some edge wear also. Top edge of the text block is somewhat dusted and has a few small spots, other edges are lightly tanned but uniform in color.
The original dust wrapper is not price clipped, showing original publisher’s price of $3.50 inside the front flap. The jacket is fairly well tanned overall, significant losses at all corners and along the spine (see accompanying images). Now protected in a removable archival jacket for proper presentation.
A really charming vintage book with absolutely breathtaking color plates.

The etching was done using a victrola needle. “Chase”, her second etching, was done in the same month. Eventually using diamond-pointed pencils, she went on to create over 250 etchings of dogs representing 26 breeds. Including private commissions, she did over 100 etchings of Scottish Terriers. This is an exceptional copy for one of these Whitman Books published at this time. I would grade it at "very good +" or better, which typically would not be that unusual, but for these books it is very much so. They were made very cheaply and were rather delicate. They did not fair well if exposed to the sun as the glossy coating would get brittle, discolor and lift. Typically also, the spines would crack and split. This book is wholly intact, the coating is complete, the spine nor hinges are not cracked, the text block closes tight and square, the tinted edges are relatively uniform in color, showing no signs of rubbing from use. There are four small surface scuffs to the edges on the bottom (see accompanying images). A hint of wear at the board corner tips and some slight chipping at the spine head and heel edges at the corners. A really, really nice example of a classic children's western published during the pinnacle of the Western in America! A wonderful time capsule. Will ship to you carefully packaged.
