THE STORY

The Bell Jar follows Esther Greenwood, a bright and ambitious college student who wins a summer internship at a New York City magazine. As the summer unfolds, Esther’s mental state deteriorates — she struggles with depression, alienation, and the narrow roles available to women in postwar America. The novel traces her descent into a breakdown and her slow, uncertain recovery. Plath drew directly on her own experiences: she had won a similar internship at Mademoiselle magazine in 1953 before her own psychiatric crisis.

First published in London in 1963 under the pseudonym “Victoria Lucas,” the novel appeared just one month before Plath’s death at age 30. Ted Hughes, Plath’s husband and literary executor, gave Faber permission to republish under her real name in 1966. The first American edition followed in 1971, after years in which the novel was unavailable in the country where it was set.
