This is a “good plus” or better antique British printed hardcover, with 29 original woodcuts by Simeon, deckled outer edge, tinted upper edge on block, spine wrapped in tan cloth, boards in brown paper, front board decorated with illustrated cloth plate.
Edition/printing not noted, but if not first, early, because the prefatory letter in the front is dated April 1920 and the title page shows a print year of 1921.
This antique book shows some wear, but is solid. No loose, torn, or folded pages. There is a book plate on the front free end paper, other wise no markings. The red tinting on the upper text block edge has bled down in the margins of some pages. Titling on the spine is sunned or faded. Board corners are bumped and worn through to the board.
Has some mileage, but still very pleasing!

Definite moisture exposure apparent along bottom front board and along first 3 dozen or so pages, with some light rippling to block pages. Spine head and tail edges are frayed as is lower front board corner. Aside from gift inscription neatly penned by Ms. Lathrop, and Ms. Cole's initials on FEP, no other writing. Book does show wear, but is unique in its provenance and is still quite quaint and pleasing. A very exciting item for the collector of illustrated children's books! The etching was done using a victrola needle. “Chase”, her second etching, was done in the same month. Eventually using diamond-pointed pencils, she went on to create over 250 etchings of dogs representing 26 breeds. Including private commissions, she did over 100 etchings of Scottish Terriers. Octavo, glossy coated pictorial wrap around boards, green tinted text block edges around, two color chapter headings along with two color full page illustrations, seemingly one per chapter by Robert Doremus, 282 pages. This is an exceptional copy for one of these Whitman Books published at this time. I would grade it at "very good +" or better, which typically would not be that unusual, but for these books it is very much so. They were made very cheaply and were rather delicate. They did not fair well if exposed to the sun as the glossy coating would get brittle, discolor and lift. Typically also, the spines would crack and split. This book is wholly intact, the coating is complete, the spine nor hinges are not cracked, the text block closes tight and square, the tinted edges are relatively uniform in color, showing no signs of rubbing from use. There are four small surface scuffs to the edges on the bottom (see accompanying images). A hint of wear at the board corner tips and some slight chipping at the spine head and heel edges at the corners. A really, really nice example of a classic children's western published during the pinnacle of the Western in America! A wonderful time capsule. Will ship to you carefully packaged.
