THE STORY
The Tolkien Reader gathers four pieces that showcase Tolkien’s range beyond Middle-earth. “The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm’s Son” is a verse drama set after the Battle of Maldon (991 AD) — its first appearance in the United States. “Tree and Leaf” pairs the essay “On Fairy-Stories,” Tolkien’s defense of the fantasy genre, with the allegorical story “Leaf by Niggle.” “Farmer Giles of Ham” is a comic fable about a reluctant hero and a dragon. “The Adventures of Tom Bombadil” collects poems drawn from the mythology of The Lord of the Rings.
An introductory essay, “Tolkien’s Magic Ring” by Peter S. Beagle, provides context for American readers encountering Tolkien’s shorter work for the first time.
THIS EDITION
Published September 26, 1966, this is the first American edition in paperback by Ballantine Books — the same publisher that issued the Authorized Edition of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The PBN U7038 catalog number and original 95¢ cover price confirm first printing status. Pauline Baynes’ name was added to the copyright page beginning with the second printing, so its absence here is consistent with a very early impression.
COVER ART & ILLUSTRATIONS
The front cover features Pauline Baynes’ vibrant, whimsical illustration: a bearded figure in a blue robe and feathered pointed hat (Tom Bombadil) seated in a lush green landscape teeming with fish, birds, and foliage. The title appears in a white oval with pink lettering. The back cover depicts a fantastical maritime scene — a young figure in a checkered outfit aboard a wooden sailing ship, listening to a seashell amid turbulent green and yellow seas, surrounded by leaping fish and starfish. The Adventures of Tom Bombadil is profusely illustrated with Baynes’ black-and-white line art throughout.
WHY IT MATTERS
- The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm’s Son makes its first U.S. appearance in this volume
- Pauline Baynes (1922–2008) was Tolkien’s preferred illustrator — she also created the iconic Narnia maps for C.S. Lewis
- Referenced in Hammond’s The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Guide, pp. 196–198, and Tolkien Collector Issue 16
