This is “good plus” cloth-wrapped vintage hardcover by Viola Meynell and published by Scribner and Sons in 1929. a handful of black and white photographs and illustrations, deckled outer edge on text block.
First edition, matching points of such as per McBride’s Identification of First Editions.
The binding is firm with intact hinges, text block is square, closes tightly. Cloth wrapped boards and spine are fairly uniform all around, some sunning along spine and upper on back board. Text block edges is free of spotting, is tanned and dusted on top. No writing, no loose, torn or folded pages. There is a loose thin piece of cloth at the spine tail. The title paste down on the spine is tanned, the one on the front cover is bright. Board corners are bumped, the cloth on the front upper is worn through to the board.
Not perfect, but still a very solid and pleasing almost antique (100 years) volume detailing the life an important woman poet and suffragist.

Why is Walt Whitman’s face as familiar as his poetry? In answering this question, Ruth Bohan tells a story of self-invention and portraiture. Whitman approached successive editions of Leaves of Grass as opportunities to establish close, dynamic links between his poetry and visual representation. First American edition as per Bill McBride's guide to identifying first editions: no additional printings are noted on the verso (see accompanying images). 1,000 copies were printed. This is a "very good - " vintage book with a solid spine and sturdy cover hinges. The paste downs have the remains of the tape used to affix the dust jacket to the book, with the front end paper having the original owner's name neatly penned. Front and back board surfaces are relatively even overall, not spotted or stained. Some edge wear to bottom board edges. The board corners are mildly bumped with a hint of wear at very tips. Titling on the spine is fairly rubbed. Book has a hint of spine cock (when laying flat, as you look at the top or bottom edge, the front cover over hangs the back cover by a tiny bit - see accompanying images). The original vintage dust jacket is not price clipped, showing original publisher's price of $2.50. Remains of tape runs along outer edges of both front and back flaps. The spine is well tanned, with small losses at top and bottom. Wear and small losses at the corners of all flap folds. Not a perfect jacket, but still pleasant.
