This is a “very good” vintage cloth wrapped hardcover, 193 pages. First American edition, illustrated with line art. Aside from original owner’s name and address penned on front free end paper and family name on half title page, no writing, no loose, torn or folded page corners. The binding is intact and strong, not creased or cracked. Text block closes tightly and is square, shows some dusting along top, a spot and some foxing along outer and upper edge. Pages internally are bright. Matching vintage dust jacket is not clipped, showing publisher’s original price of $2.95 inside front flap. Spine is tanned, as is along upper edge. Some chipping at spine head and tail and flap fold corners. Front cover illustration still bright and pleasant. Please see accompanying images for more condition details. Definite moisture exposure apparent along bottom front board and along first 3 dozen or so pages, with some light rippling to block pages. Spine head and tail edges are frayed as is lower front board corner. Aside from gift inscription neatly penned by Ms. Lathrop, and Ms. Cole's initials on FEP, no other writing. Book does show wear, but is unique in its provenance and is still quite quaint and pleasing. A very exciting item for the collector of illustrated children's books! She arrived in the United States in 1910. During the 1910’s, she was doing drawings, pastels and paintings, primarily of dogs. In April of 1921, she did her first etching, titled “Brushwood Boy”. The etching was done using a victrola needle. “Chase”, her second etching, was done in the same month. Eventually using diamond-pointed pencils, she went on to create over 250 etchings of dogs representing 26 breeds. Including private commissions, she did over 100 etchings of Scottish Terriers. Octavo, glossy coated pictorial wrap around boards, green tinted text block edges around, two color chapter headings along with two color full page illustrations, seemingly one per chapter by Robert Doremus, 282 pages. This is an exceptional copy for one of these Whitman Books published at this time. I would grade it at "very good +" or better, which typically would not be that unusual, but for these books it is very much so. They were made very cheaply and were rather delicate. They did not fair well if exposed to the sun as the glossy coating would get brittle, discolor and lift. Typically also, the spines would crack and split. This book is wholly intact, the coating is complete, the spine nor hinges are not cracked, the text block closes tight and square, the tinted edges are relatively uniform in color, showing no signs of rubbing from use. There are four small surface scuffs to the edges on the bottom (see accompanying images). A hint of wear at the board corner tips and some slight chipping at the spine head and heel edges at the corners. A really, really nice example of a classic children's western published during the pinnacle of the Western in America! A wonderful time capsule. Will ship to you carefully packaged.
