“Gutenberg’s Gift”, by Nancy Willard, illustrations by Bryan Leister, published by Harcourt Brace in 1995.
A brand new book, still sealed from the publisher.
I don’t know, since it is sealed, but I would have to assume it is a first edition since it comes from the author’s personal stock.
This is a copy from the author’s private collection from her studio work space!
I live about an hour’s drive from where Miss Willard’s family home is a block away from Vassar College where she taught for decades. In June of 2019 I received a voice message from the late Miss Willard’s husband saying that he had various titles remaining from the stock her publishers had given her over the course of her career when a book went to print.
This is a gorgeous vintage pop-up in factory fresh condition and will make a wonderful addition to your collection or as a gift to that aspiring book lover and collector in your life!

Mrs Willard was awarded the Newbery Award for her work "A Visit to William Blake's Inn".
Tight binding and gutters, no loose, torn, or folded pages, aside from Mrs. Willard's signature, no writing. Board corners are crisp. A little bit of surface wear on the back board.Original jacket is complete, with original price on front flap. Some light edge wear, small loss at the bottom of the spine edge. Octavo, glossy coated pictorial wrap around boards, green tinted text block edges around, two color chapter headings along with two color full page illustrations, seemingly one per chapter by Robert Doremus, 282 pages. This is an exceptional copy for one of these Whitman Books published at this time. I would grade it at "very good +" or better, which typically would not be that unusual, but for these books it is very much so. They were made very cheaply and were rather delicate. They did not fair well if exposed to the sun as the glossy coating would get brittle, discolor and lift. Typically also, the spines would crack and split. This book is wholly intact, the coating is complete, the spine nor hinges are not cracked, the text block closes tight and square, the tinted edges are relatively uniform in color, showing no signs of rubbing from use. There are four small surface scuffs to the edges on the bottom (see accompanying images). A hint of wear at the board corner tips and some slight chipping at the spine head and heel edges at the corners. A really, really nice example of a classic children's western published during the pinnacle of the Western in America! A wonderful time capsule. Will ship to you carefully packaged.
