THE STORY

Lewis Barton gathered these pieces from the ephemeral world of British periodicals — jokes, anecdotes, and observations that would otherwise vanish into what the title page calls “the Limbo of the lost and forgotten.” The result is a cross-section of 1950s English humor, organized into topical chapters spanning acting, advertising, art, bureaucracy, criticism, definitions, drinking, food, homes, journalism, language, marriage, and money.

As the title page explains: “some here published for the first time, and some rescued from newspapers, magazines and similar publications which though they may seem ephemeral, their contents disappear into the Limbo of the lost and forgotten.” The book is less a authored work than a carefully assembled anthology — Barton’s role is that of curator, selecting and arranging the best of British light writing.
