Over the next million years, their descendants evolve into streamlined, sea-lion-like creatures with smaller brains — Vonnegut’s answer to what natural selection would do with the human species.

**THE STORY**

Narrated by Leon Trotsky Trout — the ghost of a Vietnam veteran and son of Vonnegut’s recurring science fiction writer Kilgore Trout — the novel jumps across a million years of human devolution. Leon watches as the last fertile humans on Earth gradually lose their intelligence and gain flippers, fur, and fish-catching snouts. The dead Kilgore Trout appears four times, urging his son toward the “blue tunnel” of the afterlife. When Leon refuses, Kilgore vows not to return for a million years — leaving Leon as the sole witness to humanity’s transformation. A running gag: asterisks mark characters who will die before sunset.

The dust jacket features cover art by Jeffrey Adams: a bright turquoise upper field above a dark blue sea where two blue-footed boobies face each other, beaks nearly touching. The title “GALÁPAGOS” appears in bold white sans-serif capitals with the accent mark preserved. The back flap carries a black-and-white author photograph by Jill Krementz and the tagline: “Kurt Vonnegut takes you back one million years. To A.D. 1986 — and the beginning of the human race.” The black cloth boards have silver-stamped titling. Interior design by Wilma Robin.
