THE STORY

Set in Edenton, North Carolina, during the American Revolution, Drums follows Johnny Fraser, the son of Scottish immigrants, as he comes of age amid the political upheaval and military conflict of the colonies. The narrative traces Johnny’s journey from the settled life of colonial North Carolina through high-seas naval action alongside John Paul Jones and into the courts of Enlightenment Europe. Widely regarded as one of the finest novels ever written about the American Revolution, Drums was included in Life Magazine‘s list of the 100 outstanding books of 1924–1944. Boyd’s first published novel, it earned praise for its historical accuracy, psychological depth, and formal craftsmanship — qualities that would define his five historical novels.
