🔍 **Agatha Christie’s “The Murder at the Vicarage” — Dell Map Back #226, 1948**
*One of 18 original Christie mapbacks, featuring a hand-drawn village map on the reverse*
**THE BOOK**
Published in 1930, “The Murder at the Vicarage” was Agatha Christie’s first full-length novel featuring Miss Marple. The story set the template for her beloved amateur detective: a quiet spinster in the village of St. Mary Mead whose sharp observations unravel murder. This Dell edition dates to 1948, placing it in the golden era of American paperback publishing when Dell Books made classic mysteries accessible to millions. The novel was originally serialized in the Sunday Express before appearing as a complete book, and it helped establish the “cozy mystery” genre that Christie dominated for decades.
**COVER ART AND DESIGN**
The front cover features dramatic pulp-style illustration: a figure in blue recoiling from a splash of bright red against a dark background, with a large ear motif symbolizing eavesdropping and surveillance — fitting for a plot driven by overheard conversations. The title “MURDER” dominates in bold yellow block capitals, with Christie’s name in flowing white script above. A keyhole detail at the bottom reinforces the mystery theme. The spine shows “DELL BOOK 226” and “A DELL MYSTERY” branding. The back cover is the star: a colorful, hand-drawn map of the village of St. Mary Mead, labeling key locations including the Vicarage, the church, Miss Marple’s house, Dr. Haydock’s residence, the Blue Boar pub, the station, and a floor plan of the Vicarage study inset at the top. This mapback design was Dell’s signature feature from 1943 to the mid-1950s.
**WHY IT MATTERS**
– Dell Map Back #226, one of only 18 original Christie titles in the mapback series (1943-1957)
– First Miss Marple novel — the character went on to appear in 12 more novels and 20 short story collections
– Mapbacks are a defined collector category with established reference works (Mapback Index, Collecting Christie)
– The 1948 edition is becoming increasingly scarce compared to later reprints
– Original Dell paperback numbering system: #226 places it in the mid-period when mapbacks were at their peak
**FOR COLLECTORS**
This is a solid copy of a genuinely collectible edition. Dell mapbacks are well-documented and actively collected, with Christie titles forming the cornerstone of any serious mapback collection. The illustrated village map on the reverse makes this one of the more visually distinctive entries in the series.

**CONDITION:**
This is a “very good minus” vintage paperback with a solid binding, no significant flaws to speak of, aside from a couple of brief numerical annotations in the end papers, no writing, no loose, torn or folded pages. Text block edges are somewhat thumbed and show some tanning. Front cover has a hint of curl to it, clear coating is present on boards, however, has lifted from spine, which is sunned.
Still, a very pleasing copy, with that famous Dell map back dynamic artwork!
This edition has begun to become rather scarce.
