THE STORY

Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (1719) is widely regarded as the first English novel and remains one of the most enduring adventure stories ever written. It recounts the fictional autobiography of a shipwrecked mariner who survives 28 years on a remote tropical island, building a life from salvaged wreckage, confronting cannibals, and ultimately finding redemption through faith and resourcefulness. Based loosely on the real-life ordeal of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived four years on a Pacific island, Defoe’s novel established the castaway narrative as a literary archetype.

THIS EDITION

This Heritage Press edition prints from the original plates of the Limited Editions Club’s 1930 production, one of the most celebrated fine press books of the early 20th century. Printed by Edwin Grabhorn at the legendary Grabhorn Press in San Francisco, the LEC original was limited to 1,500 copies signed by Wilson. George Macy, founder of the Limited Editions Club, called it “one of the best fine books ever done in this country.” The Heritage Press reissue brings this landmark design to a wider audience, using the same meticulous color plates and typography. Includes an introduction by J. Cuthbert Hadden and the original Sandglass insert (Number 23), featuring the article “Wilson & His Golden Friends” detailing the book’s production history.

COVER ART & ILLUSTRATIONS

The beige cloth cover features a minimalist embossed silhouette of Crusoe standing on his island beach, casting a long shadow across the sandy ground — a restrained, evocative design typical of the Heritage Press aesthetic. The dark green spine bears “DEFOE” in serif lettering and “Robinson Crusoe” in script, with an illustration of Crusoe with his rifle at the base. Inside, Edward A. Wilson’s 14 color illustrations are printed in thin transparent inks that integrate seamlessly with the text, a technique Grabhorn pioneered to create a unified page where “text and art flowed together perfectly” (Macy). Highlights include a striking pop-up map of Crusoe’s island, dramatic seascapes of shipwreck and survival, and the iconic image of Crusoe carving a wooden cross to mark the passage of days. The map endpapers complete the cartographic theme.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • Reproduces the celebrated 1930 Limited Editions Club design by Edwin Grabhorn, considered one of the finest American fine press books of its era
  • Edward A. Wilson was among America’s foremost book illustrators; Macy called him “one of the three really great book illustrators in this country”
  • Includes the scarce Sandglass insert — a Heritage Club newsletter detailing the book’s production — adding provenance for collectors
  • The first English novel and a cornerstone of Western literature; a foundational text in the adventure and survival genres

FREQUENTLY ASKED

What edition is this? This is a Heritage Press edition printed from the Limited Editions Club’s 1930 plates, designed by Edwin Grabhorn and illustrated by Edward A. Wilson. Heritage Press was the trade arm of the George Macy Companies (parent of the Limited Editions Club), making fine press design accessible to a broader readership.

What condition is it in? The book is Near Fine with clean covers, sharp corners, and a firm spine. The slipcase is Good+ to Very Good- with rubbing to edges and corners, a full-length split along one back seam, and beginning splits at the mouth — still intact but delicate. See full report below.

Is the Sandglass insert included? Yes. The original “Sandglass” newsletter (Number 23) is present, featuring the article “Wilson & His Golden Friends” about Edward A. Wilson’s collaboration with George Macy.

FOR COLLECTORS

This edition represents the rare intersection of three titans of American fine bookmaking: Edwin Grabhorn (printer), Edward A. Wilson (illustrator), and George Macy (publisher). Their collaboration on Robinson Crusoe was famously fraught — Macy’s letters reveal Wilson was “hopping mad” about the title page design — but the resulting book was hailed as a masterpiece of integrated text and illustration. The Heritage Press reissue preserves this vision at a fraction of the original LEC cost, making it an accessible entry point for collectors of fine press books.
