THE STORY

First published in 1841 as a serial in Master Humphrey’s Clock, The Old Curiosity Shop follows the orphaned Little Nell Trent and her grandfather as they wander through Victorian England, pursued by the grotesque moneylender Daniel Quilp. The novel was an immediate sensation — Abraham Lincoln reportedly wept upon finishing it, and its serialized publication created a frenzy among readers who wrote pleading letters to Dickens begging him to spare Nell’s life.

Dickens drew on his own childhood experiences of poverty and insecurity (his father’s imprisonment in the Marshalsea debtors’ prison, young Charles’s work at a blacking factory) to create one of Victorian literature’s most emotionally resonant works.
