THE STORY

Set 3,500 years after the events of the original Dune trilogy, God Emperor of Dune follows Leto II Atreides, who has fused his human body with sandworm biology to become an immortal tyrant-ruler of the known universe. His millennia-long reign pursues the “Golden Path” — a prescient vision of humanity’s only path to long-term survival. The novel explores tyranny, prescience, the cost of immortality, and the tension between individual freedom and species survival. Herbert draws on comparisons to Plato’s philosopher-kings, the reign of ancient Egyptian pharaohs, and ecological determinism. Published in 1981, it was the first Dune novel released after the original trilogy’s completion in 1969.
