🚀 Star Wars: Return of the Jedi — The Illustrated Edition
James Kahn’s complete novelization of the final Star Wars film, packed with original storyboard art from ILM.
A FINALE FOR THE AGES
Published in June 1983 to coincide with the theatrical release of Return of the Jedi, this is the complete novelization by James Kahn — based on the screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and George Lucas, from a story by George Lucas. At 213 pages, it retells the entire film in prose while weaving in narrative detail that didn’t make it to the screen.
THE STORY
Luke Skywalker leads the rescue of Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt, confronts his father Darth Vader, and faces the Emperor aboard the second Death Star. The Rebel Alliance mounts its final assault on the Empire with the help of the Ewoks of Endor. Kahn’s adaptation expands the film’s key moments with inner monologue, sensory detail, and the kind of scene-setting that only a novelization can provide.
THE ILLUSTRATIONS
What sets this edition apart is the storyboard art by Joe Johnston and Nilo Rodis-Jamero, two of ILM’s most important visual artists. Johnston was the creative designer behind the Millennium Falcon, co-creator of Boba Fett, and the artist responsible for the X-wing and AT-AT walker designs. He went on to direct The Rocketeer, Jumanji, and Captain America: The First Avenger. Rodis-Jamero served as assistant art director on Empire Strikes Back and costume designer on Return of the Jedi — he designed the Imperial advisors and created the original concept drawing of Admiral Ackbar.
The book is filled with their black-and-white storyboard illustrations throughout the text — production artwork that shows how key scenes were visualized before filming. These aren’t generic tie-in illustrations; they’re the actual boards that shaped the look of the film.
WHY IT MATTERS
- First edition trade paperback, Del Rey / Ballantine Books, June 1983 (ISBN 0-345-30960-X, Ballantine catalog #30960)
- Storyboards by two ILM legends whose designs defined the visual language of the original Star Wars trilogy
- The illustrated novelization format was unique to the original trilogy — no equivalent edition was produced for the prequels or sequels
FOR COLLECTORS
This is the only edition of the Return of the Jedi novelization that pairs Kahn’s full text with the actual production storyboards. For Star Wars collectors, the Johnston and Rodis-Jamero artwork alone makes this a desirable copy — the storyboards show the film’s visual development in a format that’s rarely reproduced outside of expensive art books.
This is a “very good-” vintage trade paperback published in 1983 by Ballantine/Del Rey books, 213 pages with numerous black and white illustrations by Joe Johnston and Nilo Rodis-Jomero.
First edition.
The spine is tight, not cracked, it does have a hint of a little curl and a bit of creasing in the paper surface on the spine. No loose, torn or folded pages. Ghost of a label on the front board. Text block is flat, closes tightly. Text block edges show some tanning and thumbing. Bottom edge of front cover shows some edge wear and the lower corner is blunted. Some surface wear on front and back covers.
Not a perfect copy, but still quite enchanting for the vintage Star Wars fan.
