This is a (mostly) “near fine” or better 3 vintage cloth-wrapped hardcover set, published by Houghton Mifflin in 2002, numerous glossy color plates in each book by the incomparable Alan Lee. Oddly, “The Return of the King” is missing its dust jacket and has a deposit of a rubbery substance embedded in the cloth of the back board – rather disappointing, as otherwise this set is pristine.
All bindings are tight, square, close tightly. Text block edges are all bright, free from marks or signs of handling. Red cloth on all jackets is uniform, free from defects aside from as noted above. No loose, torn or folded pages. No writing.
The dust jackets on “Fellowship” and “Two Towers” are not price clipped, and for the most part flawless. Now protected in removable archival sleeves.

Hardy Boys #21 “The Clue of the Broken Blade” 1959 1959c-31

A "very good" vintage hardcover in a matching "good plus" original dust wrapper published by Grosset and Dunlap in 1959.
Binding and hinges are crisp, with no writing or marks. The black tinting at the text block head has a little spotting, but fairly uniform with a little sunning at the spine. Upper board corners are crisp, lowers just slightly bumped. Front board decoration and spine titling is crisp and complete. Text block closes tightly. Spine head and tail edges lightly bumped.
Matching dust jacket has edge wear all around with the spine lightly sunned and some chipping at head and tail. Will arrive in a removable archival sleeve.

Using Carpentieri's guide, I am able to identify this copy as what he labels a "1959C-31", meaning it is the third printing of 1959 and the 31st printing of the book. The first printing was in 1942. This edition still features the original first edition cover artwork.
