This is a “very good” green cloth-wrapped vintage hardcover published in 1953 by Charles Scribner’s Sons.
Binding and hinges are tight, not cracked. Brief, neat original owner name penned on front free end paper, a handful for pages in the first half of the book have some penciled underlining and a few very short marginal annotations at times, none of which impact the legibility of the text. No torn, folded or loose pages. Boards and spine are uniform in color, not tanned or sunned, board corners crisp.
Matching dust wrapper is complete, not price clipped. Some edge wear and chipping along spine and edges, more so along the upper, spine lightly tanned. Some tanning at upper edges. Overall, still quite pleasing.

Whitman approached successive editions of Leaves of Grass as opportunities to establish close, dynamic links between his poetry and visual representation. Bohan shows as well that Whitman, who sought out friendships with numerous artists, left a legacy absorbed after his death into the fabric of American modernism.
