This is a “very good” vintage hardcover in red paper wrapped boards and black cloth wrapped spine, gilt lettering on spine, published in 1995 by Schocken Books of New York, 110 pages, profusely illustrated with Sidney Paget’s artwork from the original Strand Magazine printings.

Matching vintage dust wrapper is complete, not clipped. Fair amount of tanning on spine, along with some moisture printing. Small loss at back lower edge. Some spotting in title area on front, upper flap edges are tanned. No marks or writing. No tears or creasing. Jacket is now protected in an archival removable sleeve.

Text block is canted such that with the book laying flat on its back cover, the front board and earlier portion of the text block over hangs the back portion of the block and back cover. No writing nor library marks or pockets. Board corners are bumped with cloth worn through to underlying board, most conspicuous at front board upper. Spine head and tail are bumped and show wear on the cloth, with a 1/2" split along hinge at back spine head. The spine and both boards are relatively uniform all around in color, some light spotting in a few places, the cloth is lifted from underlayment in places, most pronounced along spine.. This is a super early work by Cooper, being just the second novel published by him in the year 1821. 8vo, blue cloth wrapped vintage hard cover, glossy illustrated paste-on on front board, deckled outer and bottom text block edges, illustrations by C. LeRoy Baldridge, decorated end papers, 389 pages. This is a "very good -" to "very good" vintage hardcover with a pictorial front board. The binding is intact but a little weakened front and back, hinges are soft but not cracked. There are no loose. torn or folded pages, no writing apparent. The board corners are lightly bumped, more at the top then the bottoms, some wear at tips with board showing through a little. The spine head and tail are bumped with the head lightly frayed. The text block edges are lightly tanned with the pages themselves bright (see accompanying images). Some general surface wear and spotting on the front and back boards, with a 3/8" round scuff on the glossy pictorial on the front being the worst.
