THE STORY

In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, small-town lawyer Paul Biegler takes on the defense of Lieutenant Frederick “Manny” Manion, who shot and killed tavern owner Bernard Quill. Manion claims he has no memory of the crime. Biegler builds a defense around the rare “irresistible impulse” doctrine — a version of temporary insanity not used in Michigan since 1886. The novel follows Biegler’s methodical courtroom strategy as he battles a high-powered prosecutor from the Attorney General’s office, navigating witness testimony, psychiatric evaluations, and the question of whether the killing was premeditated or driven by rage over his wife’s alleged rape.

Traver (John Voelker) based the novel on the real 1952 Peterson-Chenoweth case in Big Bay, Michigan, where he served as defense attorney. The fictional Biegler — folksy, sharp, and fond of fishing — became one of the most memorable characters in legal fiction.
